Snippet Sunday

I was able to make progress this week after a major "D'uh!" moment.

I wanted to do a book dummy to wrap my mind around the 3-d aspect of images on page flaps when all I had to do was cup out scraps of paper and tape them down on my thumbnail sketches. Problems of recto-verso solved! The whole book at a glance!  I feel like such an idjit that it took me so long to find this simple and obvious solution.  Live and learn. :)

So a little snapshot of what the thumbnails look like:

Two of the pages won't have flaps. The sketches are all rough and need revising, but at least I can now get a sense of the over all flow.

It was a rough week. I hope the next one is better and allows me to get a bit more done. I would like to have some solid sketches to play around with when I get my new art supplies.

Anyone else want to share their week's creative endeavors or plans for the coming week?

That is so cool - to have the model of the whole book in front of your eyes!

I am still unable to concentrate enough to draw, but I thought of may-be writing the ideas down on LJ and destroying the pieces of paper they are on, as seeing these pieces of paper stresses me out so much.

I think it will help you to clear the clutter if it is just stressing you. I know I get to the point where something must be done, either reorder things or throw out. And it would be a pity to toss your ideas.

Looks good (from what I can see)! And you work so neatly! Mine would have been a lot more messy.

Ha! "neat" is not an adjective that I'm used to having applied to me. :P

How wonderful! That is perfectly awesome! What do you feel like you still need to determine from the dummy? All art work concepts? Or additional story flow, too.

I am currently working on aligning the scenes of my novel because I've changed the story a bit.

I think the dummy will help me more clearly apprehend the actual flow of image, more than text, when all but the current page is hidden from view. Because this is essentially nonfiction, there aren't typical story flow questions/problems to resolve. But I did try to make the ideas move as smoothly as possible from one to the next. This applies to images and text, like carrying over an (illustrated) animal from one page, where it is not the focus (of the text), to the next, where it is.

Have you found a good flow, too, with your realigned scenes?

You have had a dreadful week. I wish I could hold all four of you in a big, big hug.

This is just marvelous, though! I am love-love-loving your process and seeing this take shape.

just edited to change icon
*returns big, big hug*

It is fun doing all these little things, and I'm caught up in a desire to do more, faster, yet still (!!!) held in check by fear of messing up. So silly, I know. Ah, this reminds me of a quote I read this morning: "A painting is a conglomeration of failings. But we can say this of life also" ~ Anslem Keifer

I need to embrace the failings, make a whole slew of them, so that I can get to the final product. :P
