Only in Egypt

...OK, probably not only in Egypt, but it makes for a good subject line.

There is a young man with "interesting" ideas and ethics who works in the boutique on the ground floor of our building. The other day he told Julien, "Hey, I know of a car for sale for 40,000 EGP*. You could pay half, I'll pay half, and we'll split the use of the car. You'll have it during the day, and I'll drive it from 9:00 p.m. on."

Um, yeah, that is not going to happen. Not only for practical reasons but because the young fellow thinks, among other things, thinks it is perfectly normal not to go to his classes and offers his teachers bribes to say he attended classes and give him passing grades exams he never studies for....

Today, our housekeeper told me, "Wow, it's been really cool these past few days." The lowest temperature these days was 34.5˚C (94.1˚F)  Admittedly, this is better than the 42˚C(108˚F) we had when we got back to Egypt, and the 55˚C(131˚F) that hit the country just before our return.

Had another to share, but it seems to have slipped my mind. Maybe I'll remember later.

55˚C is hotter than I've ever experienced. I've heard it's been a massive heat wave in the Middle East this year.

Yeah, the most I've had is 51, two years ago here in Egypt. We literally felt like we were being baked alive when we went outside.

That 131 degrees scares me. How long can a person exist in that temperature--even assuming water and shade?

That is **definitely** wishful thinking on that guy's part. If he wants to set up that sort of dubious arrangement, he'd better try it with one of his own-age, own-nationality peers.

Yeah, I'm sure you could find a car butt-head like that in Denmark as well, although bribing the teachers would not be possible. :p

One thing you won't find is a Dane saying 34 C is cool, and 55 C is ridiculously hot. I believe you can even fry eggs at that temperature?

Cold and hot surely do work in relation to what has been on generally.

I remember reading the Siberian prison camp stories by Varlam Shalamov after a run of +3 c to - 5 C winters, so this baffled me how a prisoner was feeling the spring in the air and getting all warm during the - 7 C weather.

Then we had a run of colder winters, - 20 C generally. And, suddenly, the - 7 C weather (well, anything warmer than -10 C) felt so warm and comfortable, nice outside weather.

I do not think I am able to bear +34 C any more, though.
