Snippet Sunday

In that charming (?) way I have, I let the days of the week slip past me yet again, and it was only frigg's kindness (?) that brought it to my attention that today is {gasp} Sunday! Again!  Where do the weeks go?

Anyhow, I just opened Scrivener and wrote the following (Good thing we do snippets here and not darlings):

Sola left Tiqoa’s shop and headed for the harbor. The bronze disk on top of the Traders Meet was aglow with reflected dawn light, signaling that offislanders were allowed ashore. If Trader Gorious was as eager as Tiqao made him out to be, he could already be in a waverunner, on his way to the dock. Not that there was any point in rising so early; husbands never started trading before the sun topped the sea cliffs that guarded the harbor entrance.

The use of the sunlit bronze disk to send a signal is a great detail. Your world is so well-crafted! (I am picturing the city much more clearly now, since the discussion of the gate on the cliff.)

Thanks for this. It makes me really glad that I decided to SHOW the city more in this version. Seeing different worlds is what I really love about fantasy, but I often short-shifted such details in my first draft. I'm trying to be judicious about adding more.

This is really good for a quick snippet!

But I must protest at the (?) after "frigg's kindness"!

One thing I enjoy noticing in real life is the progression of sunlight down mountains and into valleys in the morning and back up in the evening, so I love your detail about the husbands not starting to trade until the sun is on the sea cliffs. Also, I love the thought of the rosy morning light reflected in the bronze disk: beautiful.

I love watching light advance, too. I've been known to take photos of it. :P And then I erase them.
